Health care tech faces HR hurdles

Interlace Health, founded in 1992, specializes in workflow automation and electronic signature solutions for the health care industry. Headquartered in Missouri, its innovative tech platform helps streamline everyday tasks for both clinicians and patients, enabling health care organizations across the country to operate more efficiently.

As the company expanded, managing HR for its distributed workforce of 60 employees across more than 20 states became increasingly complex. Without an internal HR team, handling HR compliance, payroll, benefits and employee management became time-intensive tasks.

The search for superior HR service

Meredith Winters, Interlace Health’s chief of staff, first joined the company in 2015. With limited internal HR resources, her role quickly expanded.

“I do not have a formal HR training,” Winters said. “But over time, my role took on more HR responsibilities.”

Before coming to Insperity, the company sought help from another HR provider. But the client experience fell short of expectations.

“Having employees in 20 different states could be a full-time job,” Winters said. “But we weren’t thrilled with the level of service they were providing to us.”

“We were fully engaged,” Winters said. “Things with Insperity were going really well.”

However, as the Interlace Health team began navigating rising benefit costs, growing financial strain led to the difficult decision to end its partnership with Insperity.

 “We wanted to make sure there wasn’t a better solution out there that could help us contain some of those costs,” Winters said.

The road back to Insperity

The company decided to try a smaller PEO that promised cost savings. But Winters recalled that the move from Insperity didn’t meet expectations.

“We weren’t going to save much money,” Winters said. “And to top it off, the level of service just wasn’t the same. We were now responsible for things that Insperity had previously been working on for us.”

Despite exploring other options, Interlace Health never lost sight of the value its former HR partner brought to its business. Winters maintained contact with an Insperity sales representative throughout the process, eventually leading to a renewed partnership.

This time, the organization aimed to approach its relationship with Insperity in a fresh way.

Empowering HR independence

After building a strong HR foundation with the Insperity® HR360 solution, Interlace Health made the strategic decision to take on more HR responsibilities in-house. Unlike Insperity HR360, where employer-related responsibilities are allocated between the business and PEO, the organization opted for the Insperity HRCore™ solution. This move put the employer-related liabilities fully on Interlace Health, using the technology platform provided by Insperity HRCore for payroll, HR compliance and benefits

At first, the new approach showed promise. “Insperity HRCore is a tremendous platform,” Winters said. “It has very robust potential for customization.”

However, the added HR responsibilities quickly became overwhelming, pulling focus away from other operational goals.

“Coordinating between the different providers and carriers was taking us away from other job duties,” Winters said. “We were saving a little bit of money, but it wasn’t worth the trade-off.”

Returning to full-service HR

After two years of independently managing HR tasks, Interlace Health explored transitioning back to a full-service PEO solution. The company rejoined Insperity HR360guided by the continued support of Insperity’s team.

Winters recalled that the transition was a smoother process, helping the company to accelerate and refocus strategic initiatives.

When I met with the Insperity services team, I knew exactly all of the projects I wanted to resume.
