Right Way Medical
From garage to growth: building a business the right way
Founded twelve years ago out of a garage in Westerville, Ohio, Right Way Medical is a specialty IV distributor serving the post-acute market across five states. The company supplies everything IV-related, from solutions and catheters to ambulatory infusion pumps—to specialty infusion pharmacies supporting patients after surgery or managing long-term conditions.
Growing 25 to 30 percent year over year for more than a decade, the company has scaled from 21 to 37 employees in four years, expanded into five states, and earned a spot on the Columbus Fast 50 list seven of the last eight years — along with a Business Leader of the Year nomination.
But rapid, multi-state growth introduced complexity in an area many founders underestimate: human resources. Each new state brought different laws, different filings, and different requirements, and Founder, President, and CEO Josh Prati was managing much of it alone. For a company built on doing things the right way, a piecemeal approach to HR no longer fit the mission.
Turning HR complexity into a foundation for growth
As Right Way Medical scaled, the burden of managing HR across multiple states grew heavier. Workers’ compensation became a particular challenge, with each state carrying its own laws, rules, and criteria that had to be pieced together individually. “Each state had a different law and a different rule and a different set of criteria to operate, and I was trying to manage that by myself,” Prati recalls.
Payroll added another layer of strain. “Being that we had employees in different parts of the country in different states, there’s different payroll criteria, different demands, and different filings that needed to take place,” Prati explains. Each employee also carried distinct insurance needs, and the workload fell squarely on the accounting team.
The benefits package presented a final hurdle. Right Way Medical’s in-house plan simply wasn’t robust enough to retain talent in a competitive market gap that mattered deeply for a company committed to hiring top people. What troubled Prati most was the principle of it: “It would be totally hypocritical for me to try to do something piecemeal and not the right way as it pertains to managing our employees.”
Choosing a partner committed to doing it right
After an initial experience with another provider that fell short of expectations, Right Way Medical made the decision to partner with Insperity. The move was grounded in the same people-first philosophy that defines how the company operates. “We like to say here in our business, we win with people,” Prati says. “We like to do business with people.”
The Insperity® HR360 solution met Right Way Medical’s specific needs, outpaced the competition and resolved the payroll difficulties the previous provider had left unaddressed. The result was a comprehensive HR solution equipped to support confident, multi-state growth.
Building scalable HR infrastructure
The impact of the partnership showed up quickly, starting with onboarding. “We really never had a formalized onboarding process until we went with Insperity,” Prati says. The company gained proper I-9 documentation and clear, state-specific policies that removed years of guesswork.
With multi-state HR compliance and workers’ compensation now in expert hands, Prati gained the peace of mind to focus on what matters most: growing the business.
The partnership extended well beyond compliance. Right Way Medical takes new managers through a six-month training process, and Insperity helped build customized tools tailored to exactly how Prati wanted his leaders to lead. “The team at Insperity helped us define our employee performance goals based upon the way I wanted them to lead the company and the way that they perceive themselves as leaders in leading their departments,” he explains.
Talent strategy strengthened as well. Insperity helped fine-tune every job description and benchmark total compensation against industry medians for companies of similar size, confirming that Right Way Medical pays in the upper-middle range of the market. The employee handbook also evolved from a four- or five-page document into a comprehensive, state-compliant resource covering paid time off, personal conduct, and the company’s unlimited PTO policy. “It’s something that they really collaborated with us on, and it was a very timely, efficient, detailed process,” Prati says.
Results that fuel continued growth
The results are felt across the business. With the Insperity HR360 solution, payroll strain on the accounting team eased, multi-state HR complexity is now in expert hands, and a more robust benefits package helps Right Way Medical compete for and keep top talent — giving Prati the peace of mind to lead with confidence.
After nearly five years, the partnership has supported sustained multi-state growth without missing a beat — and Prati describes it in a single word: excellence.
“Insperity has done an amazing job for us from top to bottom, from the initial onboarding to the time that we’re working on a day-to-day basis with updating HR and managing payroll,” he says. “We’ve been a long-standing client now and it couldn’t be a better experience.”
The road ahead: scaling the right way
With new markets on the horizon and multi-state expansion continuing, Right Way Medical is building on a strong foundation. Scalable HR infrastructure and a deepening partnership — spanning leadership development and expanded learning tools — are positioned to protect and grow the value Prati has spent twelve years creating.
For businesses navigating rapid, multi-state growth, Right Way Medical’s story offers a clear takeaway: the right HR partner can turn complexity into a foundation for lasting success.
