Business growth and growing HR complexity

Since 1998, AllConnected has provided top-tier IT services to clients who require a high level of cybersecurity protection. Based in the Ventura County, California, area, AllConnected is dedicated to being a dependable technology partner that forms a trusted relationship with its clients. Success in any endeavor, however, requires systems in place to foster this growth.

As the team looked toward the future, CEO Alan McDonald recalled some of their early challenges – including the difficulty of finding and retaining exceptional talent in a highly specialized field like IT.  

“The biggest challenge is always finding really good people. People make up the most crucial part of any service business,” McDonald said. “We deal with a lot of cybersecurity-related threats that impact client environments, including administrative credentials. It is a very trusted relationship. It’s important for us to find really good people that can be with us for a long time.”

Over time, these challenges grew. AllConnected scaled its operations beyond California, hiring employees and serving clients across multiple states. With this expansion, there was an increasing need to comply with various state-specific employment and cybersecurity regulations.

“It seemed like every couple of years that went by, there’s just more laws to comply with, more processes and procedures that we had to deal with on the people side of the business. And that was a big contributing factor to saying, ‘We’ve got to do something different.’”

Moving toward more specialized HR guidance

By 2015, after nearly 17 years in business, McDonald and the AllConnected team knew that a change was necessary.  

AllConnected had experimented with outsourcing parts of its HR operations, but this piecemeal approach failed to address the full scope of its challenges.

“We were with another HR provider at the time,” McDonald explained. “There was a little stint on our way to outsourcing HR where we realized just outsourcing a small piece of it wasn’t enough.”

As a professional services provider, the team at AllConnected saw many similarities between what they do for their clients and how HR outsourcing could benefit their company.

“It’s very similar to our business. Our clients have businesses that they’re very focused on, and they make the decision to outsource technology to us. And we found ourselves in the same spot. It just was with HR,” McDonald said. “And it grew to a point where we said, ‘You know what? Let’s bring in a specialist, a company that has real expertise in that area.’” That’s when they partnered with Insperity, a professional employer organization (PEO), to help manage these critical functions.  

Turning to Insperity 

Insperity stood out as the obvious choice because of its robust set of HR solutions tailored for growing businesses. From health care benefits to multistate HR compliance and employee training tools, Insperity offered support in areas that were increasingly critical to AllConnected’s success.

“Insperity had a lot more included in the package than we realized,” McDonald said.

In the end, the holistic expertise and streamlined solution Insperity brought to the table was the deciding factor. Bolstered by a commitment to providing an exceptional client experience and swift response times, Insperity laid the foundation for an HR partnership that has enabled AllConnected to grow with confidence.

Becoming an employer of choice

AllConnected’s growth meant they needed to bring on even more specialized roles: cybersecurity analysts, network engineers, project managers, administrative roles, salespeople and consultants.

“The people aspect of the business started getting more complex to manage,” McDonald recalled. “When recruiting those types of people, the benefits package that was associated with the position became more and more important. We looked at Insperity to reduce HR complexity and to offer a more competitive benefits package to our people.”

Most recently, AllConnected chose to move their 401(k) offering to Insperity. When leadership found their current provider was not competitive with plan administrative fees, they looked into how Insperity could help. AllConnected reported that switching to Insperity for this offering resulted in a 68% cost reduction. This both greatly simplified the benefits administration process for AllConnected and provided an additional benefit for their current and prospective employees.

This robust benefits offering helped AllConnected stand out in the recruiting process and beyond, enabling them to attract and retain the top talent that can help their organization thrive.

Navigating unexpected challenges 

Over the years, Insperity has proven itself invaluable in moments of unexpected challenge. During the pandemic, for instance, the Insperity team worked late into the night and supported AllConnected in applying for the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) program.

“(Insperity) stepped up and delivered,” McDonald said. “(They) helped us through that in a very professional, fair way that really strengthened the partnership.”

As AllConnected continues to grow, the partnership with Insperity plays a vital role in preparing the organization for challenges ahead. The company expects its team to surpass 50 employees in the next three to five years, which will only increase the demands on onboarding, administration and HR compliance. “Knowing that Insperity had not only the HR expertise for those different states, but could also help us with the onboarding and offboarding challenges of those employees and having health care in every one of those states, was a big deal,” McDonald said.
